Banning the import of luxury items, the government made major changes in the decision

 


The Economic Co-ordination Committee of the Cabinet of Pakistan relaxed the import policy order issued by the government in May to ban the import of luxury goods and allowed the import of goods arriving at ports and airports till June 30. , Lifting ban on timber items till August 31 and allowing purchase of items from Afghanistan in Pakistani Rupees.

The meeting of the Economic Co-ordination Committee was chaired by Finance Minister Muftah Ismail in which three separate summaries on relaxation and changes in the Import Policy Order 2022 were presented by the Ministry of Commerce.

The Commerce Ministry was of the view that when the import of luxury goods was banned on May 19, many companies had placed their orders and their goods had reached the ports. Now those items lying at airports and ports are deteriorating and cannot be returned. Therefore, it is necessary to allow the companies concerned to import these items.

The Economic Co-ordination Committee, after consideration, once again allowed the delivery of goods arriving at airports and seaports to the concerned companies within the country till June 30, 2022.

Presenting its second summary, the Commerce Ministry told the Economic Co-ordination Committee that imports of timber and timber products should also be allowed as orders in this regard were placed months ago and their delivery is still ongoing.

The ECC, after review, decided that the ban on imports of timber and its products would be effective after August 31, 2022, and that imports would be allowed until then.

Under the third summary, the Economic Co-ordination Committee (ECC) granted conditional permission to import goods made in Afghanistan to Pakistan for one year and decided that they would be procured in Pakistani Rupees only. I will also be required to provide a certificate of readiness.

It should be noted that the present government had decided to ban the import of luxury items in order to increase the value of the dollar and increase the country's reserves, reduce the trade deficit and stabilize the country's economy.

The banned items include mobile phones, cars, food items, gems and jewelery, leather, chocolate and juices, cigarettes, imported confectionery, crockery, furniture, fish and frozen food, dried fruit make-up items. And tissue papers.

Immediately after the implementation of this decision, the customs officials at the airports also stopped the Pakistanis coming from abroad from bringing their necessities and started taking those goods from the passengers. After which the Ministry of Commerce had to explain.

In this regard, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Salman Sufi also held a press conference and said that passengers returning from abroad within a month will now be able to bring luggage up to ڈالر 400 without duty.

For those who stay for more than a month and for 60 days, the limit has been raised to ڈالر 800, while for those who have spent more than 60 days abroad, the limit for duty-free luggage has been raised. Set at 12 1,200.

In addition, the federal government has relaxed the Import Order 2022 several times.
